Barcelona

I have now reached my 2 month mark in Europe. It has been a wild adventure filled with new friends, new cities, and amazing memories.

I spent this past weekend exploring the wonderful city of Barcelona. Barcelona is a part of Spain, but its official language is Catalan, so it was more difficult than usual to communicate and make our way around the town. I traveled with my friends Stephanie and Q from Aberdeen during the trip. We flew out of Edinburgh very early on Saturday so Friday we didn't sleep in order to get to the airport and catch our flight. Although it worked, we all were exhausted our entire first day there and crashed at our hostel early.

We first went to La Rambla, a street that over the years has become a huge market. We went there for some breakfast/gelato, and some quick tourist shopping. There was so much to look at while in the square! To the right is a photo of the fruits at the market.

After that, we went and bought double-decker bus tour tickets. We got the pass for 2 days so the entire trip we could use it as a mode of transportation. We traveled around the town looking at all the amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains that surround Barcelona.

We continued after our first stop to the Picasso Art Museum. It sat on a large hill overlooking the heart of Barcelona. To the top left is a photo of myself in front of the museum. It was very interesting because they were in the process of reconstructing his artwork.

There were huge fountains outside the museum. Later in the night we would return to see a light show in the large fountain. Apparently, the light show would last two hours and it only happened once a year. We were very lucky to get to see the light show but we did not stay the entire two hours.

We obviously had to try some Spanish cuisine while in Barcelona and although I did not try the paella, I had some churros which were delicious. To the right is a photo of my churros. After finishing our visit to the museum and watching the fountain light show, we called it a night as we were extremely exhausted.

The next day, Q went to church since it was Sunday. Stephanie and I explored a flea market outside of the church and traveled down to the beach. To the left is a photo of myself at the beach. Q later re-met up with us and we continued touring around Barcelona.

We took our bus to Sagrada Familia, a large, unfinished church that is still being built. We didn't get to go inside but we did get to circle the building and look at its wonderful architecture, as seen on the top left. We went all the way to the top of Barcelona to Tibidabo, a church that sits on top of a small mountain overlooking the city. To the left is a photo of the church on the hill. To the right is a photo from the top of Tibidabo.

Overall, the entire trip was a blast. I loved Barcelona and I hope someday that I can return and explore more of the wonderful city.
